As an ISA Certified Arborist and a gardener for over 50 years, I am always looking for new books and ideas in gardening. While I can't agree with everything in this book, it does present very good information in general. As usual, there is some regional bias in the suggested varieties, but you can overcome that by knowing your USDA and Sunset Zones, your particular regional and local soils and the micro-climates around your home. Mr. Phillips goes into more details than Mr. Reich ("Grow Fruit Naturally") and I like that--more of the "why's" instead of just the "do's". His explanations are in everyday language and succinct. He has a good discussion of root stocks, lots of charts & diagrams, and beautiful photos. The only parts where I really can't agree with Mr. Phillips is regarding the use of Hugelkultur and some of his home-brewed sprays--many of these are proven "gardening myths". However, many people will find these ideas, unscientifically proven as they are, inviting and try them--and that is OK. Gardening knowledge is gained by trying new things and experimenting. Despite these few areas of disagreement, I think the book is well worth reading and presents excellent information in a very readable format that everyone can learn from and enjoy. There is alot of overarching, conceptual discussion, but there is also the fundamental science and all the info needed to establish and manage your orchard. It is written more conversationally than procedural, so just know that before you buy. That said, I followed a majority of the guidance while setting up my orchard this year. I planted the same trees for both my neighbor and myself, but used the holistic method on my side of the road. Here we are in August, year one, and my side had literally 4x the foliage all the way down the rows. There is nothing else different other than the authors guidance. He knows what he is talking about.
