I recently received 'Dressage Principles Based on Biomechanics'. What a gorgeous and useful book! It is so beautifully designed with such lovely photographs that I feel transported to another world when I'm reading it. The historical material is fascinating but it is also very practical and I'm learning so much. I'm sure it will be an inspiration for many years to come. The author's horses are just magnificent and obviously meticulously and kindly trained and ridden and happy in their work. This is a wonderful tribute to dressage. Because I suffer from a lack of clinics and upper level instruction in my area, I am an equestrian book junkie. Most books highlight the value of classical training and quote the great masters to great lengths but many have difficulty with the mechanisms of such practice. The title "The Bio-mechanical Basics of Classical Riding" implies a lack of upper level thought. This is most certainly not the case. Dr. Ritter has dissected the important movements and provided the essential how and why for a rider hungry for advanced knowledge. This volume would serve well as a text in an equestrian program.I was taken by a highly developed training scale that is accompanied throughout by detailed application of the aids and how the neurological "web" functions. This understanding is essential for anyone interested in developing their equine experience. I find that one page or even paragraph at a time is food for perhaps hours of thought. "Equestrian Bio-Engineering"!Finally, one has the treat of beautiful illustrations and pictures that highlight the textual points providing a visual as well as an intellectual treat!I am no where near "done" with this book and may never be! There is so much to consider and eventually experience.
